Ann Phoya

Sector-Wide Approach, Malawi Ministry of Health

Ann Phoya, PhD, RNM, is currently serving as the director of the Sector-Wide Approach for the Ministry of Health in Malawi. In this capacity, she oversees the development of the Program of Work for the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with stakeholders. Previously, Dr. Phoya was the technical lead for the Safe Motherhood Programme, which sought to address the causes of maternal mortality in Malawi; she held this role while serving as the director of nursing in the Ministry of Health from 2005 to 2006. Dr. Phoya was instrumental in the development of a patient charter to protect the rights of patients in health care settings in Malawi. During her tenure as director of nursing, Dr. Phoya was awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture at Winston-Salem State University’s School of Health Sciences, in the United States, during the 2008-2009 academic year. Dr. Phoya has been instrumental in administering grants, including the Emergency Human Resource Plan to address the health workforce crisis that is prevailing in Malawi.
